Why buy from Glowden Doodles?
Glowden Doodles only uses genetically health tested and veterinarian inspected dogs in our breeding lines. We are an in-home breeder that takes the time to nurture not only the mamas but also each and every puppy starting from day one. All puppies are vaccinated and come with a health guarantee. We don’t just breed dogs, we raise family members.
What is Genetic testing?
Genetic testing is taking a saliva sample and sending it into a professional genetic testing center like Embark. They test for all known genetic diseases and are also able to provide breed detailed info like what colors and sizes that dog can possibly produce. Genetic testing is very important to help avoid continuing lines that will have a much higher likely hood of becoming ill due to genetics. Genetic testing can’t predict everything, but is a great way to bring peace of mind to what it can predict!
Can I return a puppy?
No. A pet is a lifetime commitment, please make sure you have the time and resources to own a pet before committing to buying a pet. This goes for every type of pet.
How old will my puppy be when I take it home?
Puppies do not go home before they are at least 8 weeks old. A puppy doesn’t just get milk from its mamma. Mamma dogs teach puppies manners and how to behave with both people and other dogs. Puppies that don’t get enough time with their Mom and siblings can be prone to many bad habits including frustration in new situations, poor bite inhibition, and lack of focus in training.
How much should I exercise my puppy?
There is a lot of conflicting responses to this topic. In general, it’s accepted that you should not over-exercise any dog, but especially dogs that are still growing. Try to restrict heavy exercise/activity to 20 min or less until fully grown. Over-exercising in the growth stage is the leading cause of hip and joint issues. Also, keep in mind the outside temperature, an overheated dog will not seek rest as quickly as a person would, leading to quick overheating and dehydration.
Do I need to worry about worms?
Worms are very common in dogs. We treat worms in our mamas and puppies but a dog can get worms very quickly and from many sources including the dirt in your backyard. Talk to your vet for a worming schedule and what to look out for.
What should I feed my puppy?
A reputable brand name puppy food is recommended. There are lots of options out there all claiming to be a great option. Make sure to pick a brand with a good high balance of protein, fat and some carbs, avoid foods with artificial colors, hormones or steroids, or chemical preservatives. Grain-free foods have also been linked to heart disease.
Is it safe for my puppy to play with my kids?
Kids should never be left unsupervised with animals. Until you have fully trained your puppy (and your kids!) you should be there in case of emergencies.
Should I spay/neuter my puppy?
Our puppy contract requires you to spay/neuter by 1 year of age. It’s important to not spay/neuter too soon though, talk to your vet about this. Fixing your pet has many positive advantages like reduced cancer rates and unwanted pregnancies. Raising a litter of puppies properly is a lot of work that most people don’t have the time for.
Will my dog shed?
The short answer is possibly. A Doodle isn’t necessarily shedding free. A cross between a Poodle and a Golden retriever means roughly half the litter will have poodle type coats and half will have Retriever type coats. There are many factors that effect shedding and only one that has been tested for genetic traits can be guaranteed non shedding if they have the right genes.
Will my puppy be hypo-allergenic?
Again, the short answer is no. There are several types of pet allergies to consider. Some people are allergic to pet dander and some to saliva. An F1 (first generation doodle) has a 50% chance of have lowing dander/shedding and may be good for those with allergies, but Doodles are not guaranteed non-allergenic. For best results consider an F1b (A doodle that has been bred back to another poodle) as they have a much higher percentage of Poodle genetics and will have more chance of being poodle type coats that are less shedding/dander.
